The final touch to their 1930s aesthetic is Voss’ mic – a vintage-inspired Super 55.īut before they became a modern day rendition of Les Paul and Mary Ford, Jason and Kate were musical acquaintances in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, where each built a solid reputation playing with a variety of bands. They bring these songs to life through Goessl’s custom Epiphone Swingster (a cross between the guitars played by jazz great Joe Pass, and guitarist and creator of the “Nashville sound” Chet Atkins), which is played through a custom amp called the Retrofier, along with Voss’ pink melodica (also known as a blow-organ). We cover a local Seattle band called Prom Queen and we also cover a Squirrel Nut Zippers song which is a band from the ‘90s that really influenced both of us and our music…We have poppy tunes and we have some really tremolo, moody ballads on there, so it’s a pretty diverse album.” “It’s a pretty big mix of songs from the ‘30s, original songs.
“We just released it less than a month ago, called Makes My Heart Sway, and the title track is actually an original song written by Jason,” Kate said. They are currently one week into their Wisconsin/Minnesota leg of a Makes My Heart Sway spring tour, making 14 stops in three weeks between Superior and Madison to share the music off their newest album. The husband-and-wife team of Jason Goessl and Kate Voss has been building a repertoire of classic tunes from the 1930s and ‘40s for just two years but in that time, they have embarked on three national tours, played more than 200 live shows, and released three albums.
Goessl will kick off the summer music scene in Baileys Harbor with a refreshing take on vintage pop this Saturday at Door County Brewing Co. Wonderful”, the zany jazz/ blues of Fred Lane’s “I Talk To My Haircut”, the fine pure New Orleans approach of “Cookie” and the upbeat standard “Happy Days Are Here Again”. Then there we are treated to a torch ballad in Mathus’ own “Mr. Lend an ear as well to the violin on the klezmer/ jazz of “Purim Nigrum”.
“She’s Ballin’’ is a jumping big band blues, in total contrast to the initially folky “Train On Fire”, where violinist Johnny Bird returns to the fold for the first time since 1998.
Frankie Valli’s ‘60s hit, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, sounds like a mid-’60s beat band jamming with a tango orchestra, and later a French film soundtrack, all sung by Gomez Addams. Here we get not only the band’s own warped, sorry, individual take on jazz, as on opening track, Jelly Roll Morton’s “Animule Ball”, with its elements of Duke Ellington’s 1920’s “jungle” sound, but vintage pop as well. While others may have picked up on it, but no one does it better. And whether these songs were ever “lost” is also another question, but really, who cares? This is another excellent Squirrel Nut Zippers album. Edmond “Doc” Souchon may not have been that mysterious, as he was a guitarist and writer of jazz, but he was indeed instrumental in the New Orleans jazz revival. Jimbo Mathus and his crew continue to convert and subvert vintage jazz on this set, “inspired by all the mysterious characters from the history of New Orleans jazz music”.
